Massive protests have erupted in Venezuela as citizens express their dissatisfaction with poor economic conditions, increased shortages of basic goods, and high crime rates. The protests have been met by increased repression from President Nicolas Maduro’s government, resulting in more than a dozen dead, the arrest of one of the leaders of the opposition Leopoldo López, and media censorship.
What’s at the heart of the protests? Will they yield any policy changes? Is there a way forward to reach a resolution? How should the international community respond?
